Eric and I were privileged enough to be able to volunteer our time to photograph for the Special Olympics. Hundreds of Special Olympics athletes, coaches, family and friends from all Hawaiian islands gathered for the Holiday Classic held the weekend of December 5th through 7th on Oahu. The Holiday Classic was hosted by the local military bases: Kaneohe Marine Corps, Hickam Air Force Base, and Pearl Harbor where the athletes competed in Basketball, Bowling, and Bocce Ball. The athletes truly looked excited to have their medals presented by local military and police officers. Eric and I had so much fun capturing the excitement of the games and ceremonies. I got so into the basketball games that I just had to try to sneak in some applause between taking pictures.
The Opening Ceremony alone was incredible! Held in an empty hangar at Hickam Air Force Base, we all enjoyed the lighting of the Olympic torch, a hula performance, and an amazing show put on by the popular local reggae band Big Every Time (BET). The athletes went wild for this band! Eric and I had a great time dancing along with the athletes to BET’s beats.
If you have never volunteered with the Special Olympics, we definitely suggest it. You wont find a livelier, more spirited crowd. I spent many weekends during my high school years volunteering back in San Jose, California and am so happy to get back into it here. The organization itself is wonderful to its athletes and volunteers. Even though we signed up very last minute to volunteer, we were met with open arms at every door. The many corporate sponsors of the Special Olympics made sure the athletes and volunteers were well hydrated at VERY well fed during the three day tournament.
We had such and amazing time photographing the games and meeting the athletes. Congratulations to all Hawaii Special Olympics athletes and volunteers for an AMAZING Holiday Classic. We can’t wait to until next year!
